Our tupuna who travelled to Aotearoa navigated by the stars.  As they knew, to navigate is to explore, and then to discover, choose, adapt and create.

Accelerating leadership capability and capacity among Māori and Pasifika staff is a priority for South Canterbury District Health Board (SCDHB) and the region’s health sector organisations. Navigate, a three-month leadership and learning programme, offers health professionals the opportunity to explore, and then to step up, develop and demonstrate greater leadership in our health care system.

It brings people together regardless of profession, background or position to wānanga, grow and develop their inherent leadership talents. Its goal is to illuminate, accelerate and multiply leadership capability and strengthen relationships with Māori communities.

Facilitated primarily in a kaupapa Māori way with a tuākana teina approach, it draws upon a Māori perspective on leadership. All SCDHB staff, Māori or not, are welcome to enrol. Marae based wānanga gives participants the opportunity to invest in their own leadership and their future service to the community.

A shift in leadership style from a traditional, centralised, authority-oriented, budget-managed medical organisation to a distributed, growing, learning health care team guided first by the health needs of its community requires a shift in behaviour and thinking.

Join Joseph Tyro, Director Māori Health at SCDHB and team who will explain how the programme has shifted behaviour at a personal and organisational level, and the amazing personal development and relationships that have resulted.

Joseph Tyro, Ngāi Tahu/Te Ati Haunui-A-Pāpārangi/Ngāti Rangi, Director Māori Health, South Canterbury District Health Board and team will discuss the kaupapa of the programme and key achievements.
